Soil Preparation

Kill weeds and grasses with a recommended herbicide: remove rocks and debris: rototill to a depth of 3 to 5 inches.

Leveling

Work the soil, then level and smooth with a rake.If soil seems loose, rolling may be done to firm soil before installing the sod. Final grade should be 1 inch below walkways and driveways. Water soil lightly just before installing sod.

Sod Installation

Begin to install your sod immediately after delivery. Start laying your sod along a straight edge such as a walkway or driveway. Butt joints tightly together but do not overlap. Stagger joints similar to rows of bricks.Use a sharp knife to cut and shape sod around curves, trees and borders.

Now you can install a sod lawn anytime during the year when the ground can be tilled. There is no need to wait for the "right" season to put in your lawn.

Water is Critical

Start watering within 30 minutes, even if all the sod isn't installed yet to prevent wilting and drying. Never let the sod dry out. Completely water your new sod to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Keep your new lawn moist but not soggy during the first 7 to10 days after installation. Do not let water pond. Early morning waterings are the best.

Once grass is established, shaded areas continue to require less water than full sun areas. Again, a fungicide may be needed during hot rainy periods when grass blades remain moist for prolonged periods to reduce grey leaf spot and brown patches. For an established shaded lawn, a good rule of thumb for watering is to allow grass to wilt slightly, apply up to, but no more than one inch of water; only water again when there is no more wilt. There are occasions when spot watering is necessary.

In reality, sodding turns out to be less expensive over time once such cost as increased maintenance and repair are accounted for. Add to that the instantaneous and finished look you get with sod and it is clear to see that sodding is preferable in most instances.
